We were thrilled to see glamorous bumps stealing the show on the red carpet, with huge admiration for actress Paula Patton working a popping tangerine coloured Carolina Herrera gown, proudly showing off her lovely curves and glowy olive skin.

When asked what her husband Robin Thicke said to his wife when he first saw her dressed up & ready to hit the red carpet, he recounted: "Honestly, I think you look beautiful, you look perfect. You're the hottest baby mama around."

TV chef Jamie Oliver and his wife Jools are expecting their fourth child, it was announced today.
Model and writer Jools, 34, is due to give birth in September and the pair are said to be 'delighted'.
This comes less than a year after they became parents to their third daughter with the birth of Petal Blossom Rainbow in April 2009.

Jools has previously spoken of how her greatest ambition is to be a mother, and detailed her struggle to conceive in an interview with the PM's wife and patron of Wellbeing of Women - Sarah Brown .

Jamie recently spoke out about his wife's joy at motherhood .
He explained: "She just wanted to be a mother and that was it. Until she became a mother, I never understood how honest she was being.
She's a mum and that's her world."

We think that baby number 4 will be the best Mother's day present ever Jools could receive, though we would gladly settle for one of Jamie's fantastic m others day recipes! We think the Tuscan Tart looks particularly delicious.

Bumps and Babies Mile For Sport Relief

TV personality Denise Van Outen, who is expecting her first child, has recruited a team of pregnant celebrities and famous new mums to undertake the first ever 'Bumps and Babies Mile' in aid of Sport Relief.
The challenge which takes place over 16 flagship events across the UK on Sunday 21st of March, and asks participants to walk, run, or jog1 mile and raise sponsorship to help some of the worlds most impoverished people - so mum's and bumps get in gear to stretch your legs for a good cause.

Denise said of the Sport Relief event: "A group of heavily pregnant women and power-pramming mums waddling around Battersea Park will probably be quite amusing, but it will prove that anyone and everyone can join in the fun and rise to the challenge by getting sponsored to do the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile."

"Are our cancer services what we should expect" revealed that whilst most thought the NHS was excellent at dealing with those suffering from cancer, more medical research needed to be done for better treatment and prevention and there should be more education and awareness so women could keep themselves well.

So spread the word, and push yourselves, your sisters, your mothers and your friends to have the tests you may not have had - be empowered by the knowledge of your health, and don't be afraid to grill doctors with questions throughout every chapter of your life....as well we all know, it's women that make the wheels go round !

Conceptual artist & film maker Sam Taylor Wood (42) confirmed this week that she is pregnant with her 3rd child. Taylor Wood who has 2 daughters from her marriage to Jay Jopling, recently became engaged to her fiance actor Aaron Johnson (19), and is said to be 'very very happy' with the news. She met her toy boy fiance on the set of her movie 'No Where Boy', a biographical look at the life of a young John Lennon - we hope it's as good as our favourite Sam Taylor Wood piece.....perhaps with a little more action !

Safety Snow Joke

One of our favourite yummy mummies Heidi Klum took to the slopes with her whole family including the newest addition to her family, baby Lou (4 months).

As enchanted as we are with Mrs Klum/Samuel we couldn’t help but feel as she was out shone in the fashion stakes by her gorgeous childen. Looking like true ski buffs the Klum -Samuel clan wore brightly coloured snowsuits and the latest fashion of kiddie ski accessories: animal helmet covers.

Heidi's daughter Leni wore a fabulous snow leopard design whilst son Johan wore a striking tiger. These delightful accessory are produced by US company CrazeeHeads, and come in either the plush animal collection or the fashion collection which is great for top to toe ski-wear co-ordination.

Finally Ludo has arrived, By Marina Fogle

After nearly 10 months of anticipation, I’m finally a very proud Mummy. Little Ludo Fogle was born on 9th December and after a bit of a rocky start is now thriving and growing fatter every day. Where to start. I went into labour the day before my due date and having said that I couldn’t wait to feel my first contraction, I very soon changed my mind…. 24 hours of breathing, tens, baths and groaning later, I was still only 2cm dilated and I went into hospital begging them to give me an epidural. I seriously considered calling Ludo Epidural in homage to the wonderful anaesthetic. It was amazing.

In the end however I needed to have an emergency cesarean – I’d developed an infection and had a very high temperature and they’d noticed some meconium in my waters as well as Ludo’s heartbeat slowing after my contractions. I was whisked into theatre and ten minutes later a little screamer was placed on my chest. I was totally exhausted and overwhelmed – I hadn’t slept for three nights but so relieved that our little boy had arrived safely. We’re home from hospital after a bit of a longer stay. Ludo had 24 hours in the special care unit as he’d punctured a lung and also had an infection. It was heartbreaking to have my little one taken away from me and not being able to cuddle him but the wonderful staff made both of us better and he reminds me many times a day now just how strong and healthy his lungs are.

We’re now settling in at home and starting to live life again. One of my favourite things is taking Ludo out for walks with the dogs. He loves being outdoors, cosily wrapped up in his Mini-la-Mode cashmere and I find that he sleeps even better after a good dose of fresh air. I currently feel like a cow, feeding my son every three hours with very little time for anything else. However I do hope to continue this blog, reflecting on what was indispensable during my labour.

Asked about why she chose to extend her denim range into maternity Gellar replied: "We were approached to do it, and I thought it was a perfect progression of the brand, since I’m into fit and making women feel good about themselves. Plus, I wanted to do maternity differently than my competitors. I wanted to make sure the jeans fit perfectly! I’d put a fake baby belly on my tummy, fit the jeans on, and think about how my hips would expand. I cross-fit on pregnant friends, by making the jeans in their size, then having them come in to try them on. That way, they’ve not just been fitted by someone wearing a fake belly, but by real pregnant women, too! I’m testing out new waistbands now. I have a friend who’s currently 7 months pregnant, so she’ll be my latest fit model. I haven’t been pregnant myself, so I don’t know the discomforts and changes associated with pregnancy, but it’s nice to know that I can have friends who will come in and give me the truth!"

Asked about the best selling maternity styles - The two most popular Paige maternity styles right now are the Laurel Canyon in the McKinley wash and the Westbourne also in the McKinley wash. I think people love these styles because they can wear them to work or out, and they can dress them up or down. They’re comfortable, but they’re made of a poly blend so they also hold you in. So they feel almost like a girdle, but comfier because they’re stretchy!

Paige’s Top Five Tips For Buying Maternity Jeans
Consider your style needs. First, decide if you want something comfy to wear on a daily basis or something hot and sexy to wear out. If you want an everyday jean, go for a pair that’s lighter-weight and stretches more. If you want a sexy jean for nighttime, look for a skinny style or a legging or jegging (denim leggings) in a thicker or heavier fabric that really holds you in — you’ll be one sexy mama!

Also think about the kind of tops you like to wear. If you’re into long tunics, jeans with a skinnier leg — like the new Willow style — are your best bet. Fitted tops look best with boot-cut or flare leg jeans, otherwise you’ll look big all over. Dressing — even with a bump — is still all about proportions.

Pick the right size. With denim, a lot of women tend to think, “Oh I’m pregnant, so if I’m a 28 in my normal jeans I’ll need to get a 29 or 30 in maternity.” But our size 28 maternity jeans fit the way they should fit — you don’t need to go up a size! Although for some women that last trimester is tricky — sometimes you might have to go with a larger size those last couple of months.

All maternity jeans aren’t created equal. Some jeans have panels and some don’t — it really depends on your preference. I have one style called the Westbourne that’s amazing. It’s low-rise and has elastic pulls on the inside. You can loosen the jean up as you go through pregnancy. It’s the same idea as little kids’ jeans, where you can pull the waistline in then expand as they grow. What’s great about this style is that after you have your baby, as you lose weight you can tighten them back up again until you’re ready to wear your regular jeans.
Do the sit-down test! Try it out in the dressing room. It’s a great way to see if the overall fit or panel work for you. Sometimes when you’re seated, the spot where the belly panel meets the jean can be uncomfortable, digging into a pressure point. And it’ll only get worse as you get bigger. The key is to find jeans — with or without the panel — that have a waistband that hits below your belly.

Shoes matter. More than likely, you’ll be mostly wearing comfy flats during your pregnancy, but you might want a pair of jeans you can wear with your heels too! So get two pairs — one that’s hemmed for flats and one that’s hemmed for heels.

Gisele wasn't the only supermodel to give birth this week, with Jourdan Dunn swiftly following suit having a baby boy midday on December the 8th. Having famously took to the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier 7 months pregnant Dunn has made it clear of her intent return to the catwalk as soon as she can.

The lovely Amy Adams announced she is pregnant with her first baby due in spring next year. Adams had said that she wishes to know the sex of the baby before the birth, she is quoted as saying “We’ll probably find out. I thought about waiting and I just don’t think that’s really my personality,” notes the actress, 35. “It’s not about planning a nursery, it’s more about I just want to know. I want to be able to relate in that way. That’s what works for me, but I totally believe in whatever works for the individual.”

Padma Lakshmi made a bold maternity statement, wearing a striking scarlet dress to the Indochine's 25th Anniversary celebration. I finally bit the bullet and bought all the baby stuff I’ve been told is essential for the arrival of a newborn. I’d been recommended a company called Babylist which can advise and order everything you need – from nipple guards to changing tables. I was a bit suspicious – my wedding list company had failed to deliver on time and seemed intent on selling us the most overpriced ‘gifts’ . I hate the idea of being ripped off and didn’t want it to happen again.

By the time I was 34 weeks though, the thought of traipsing around dozens of shops getting all this stuff (and probably forgetting half of it) didn’t appeal to me at all. So I persuaded my sister Chiara to accompany me and together with my sister in law’s 12 week old labradoodle puppy, we headed off to the Babylist warehouse – ‘just to see’.

We were greeted by the charming founder Anita, and as soon as word of the puppy spread , she was followed by the rest of the Babylist girls. Sitting comfortably with a delicious decaf cappuccino and a plate of dried fruit, we proceeded to go through everything a prospective parent will need for the arrival of their baby. Babylist stocks a huge range of brands and the consultants will advise you on which is best for you. As they’re not selling only one brand, their advice really is impartial.

Anita had prepared a list of things to consider – everything from nursery furniture including nappy bins, to breast pumps and baby baths. Included were a few things I never would have thought of – for instance a thermometer that you stick in the baby’s ear that will instantly tell you what their temperature is. If you think your baby might be unwell, the first thing the doctor will ask if you call is if they’ve got a temperature. This really is the perfect thing to have in your medicine cabinet. They’ve also got all the cute stuff – adorable hand knitted cashmere cardis and hats, mobiles and by far the nicest nursery furniture I’ve seen, as well as buggies, car seats.

I left two hours later with a comprehensive list of things I’d bought. Their prices are retail prices and they promise to match any price on the high street. I even have a list of things to order on my next Ocado shop – nappies, baby wipes, cotton wool pads etc. Best of all, your haul is delivered to your house and put in your nursery so that you can spend the extra time that you’ve saved with your feet up, relaxing.

The combination of the weather finally cooling and my stomach finally expanding has made choosing what to wear every morning this week particularly hard. There’s really no doubting I’m pregnant now - good when I get shunted to the front of the queue at the bank; bad if I’ve got nothing that fits.

So it’s back to basics. I’ve invested in one of every colour of Homemummy Rouched Bound Vest tops. They flatter my bump and are way long enough to cover its vast expanse.

And then you get to play with whatever goes on top. A selection of good cardigans is essential and thanks to this season’s trends, you don’t necessarily need to stick to maternity styles. My favourite is this Christopher Fisher Tie Cardigan which is the perfect piece throughout pregnancy and beyond. The tie, ties just above your bump giving it definition without making it look too big. It’s also not too bulky so you can easily wear it under a coat as the weather cools. Then when your baby is born and your tummy is not yet flat, the ties hide what needs hiding.

Another good trend is for long cardigans. I’ve got this Long Sleeve Stripe Cardi from Hobbs which is great over my skinny paige jeans or my beloved MLM leggings. It buttons up over my bump and keeps both of us toasty warm.

For a bit of evening sparkle, I love this sequin Juicy Couture cardigan. Again it would go over my mlm leggings with a pair of sky high heels (provided my husband is around to cling to and there’s no walking involved).

I had to pop into Sainsburys the other day, literally just for a second. It was one of those days, raining; I was running late and of course had forgotten to buy tarragon for dinner. In a black mood, I nipped into the car park and there was a mother and child space that enticed me into it. As I stepped out of my car, a man in a yellow jacket approached me and asked “Excuse me madam, where is your child?” to which I replied “I think it should be perfectly obvious that it’s in my uterus”. He didn’t really have an answer to that. Ha! No-one messes with a pregnant woman…

It’s a sad week for me. All is well with my baby but I finished my course of ante-natal classes. I somewhat poo-poohed the idea when it first came to signing up; I’d read a hell of a lot of books and coming from a medical family I knew everything, surely? A friend finally convinced me to sign up to Christine Hill (Christine Hill Associates 020 8994 4349), an obstetric physiotherapist who runs ante-natal classes in Chiswick and in September I trundled along, convinced I’d learn nothing new.

As our group of ten mummies-to-be sat there, nervously surveying each other, Christine announced “You’ll all be best friends. You may not think so now, but I guarantee you’ll be on the phone to each other constantly when your babies all arrive”. And thus our journey started. The weekly two hour sessions covered everything from what happens to you anatomically and emotionally, to what kit is essential for your new baby, via pain relief, breathing techniques and how to deal with your mother-in-law.

Christine tells it how it is – she’s very no-nonsense and the one thing you’re guaranteed to get is a straight answer. Little things like, she believes very strongly that you have to get into hospital within an hour of your waters breaking. They will quickly monitor the baby and if all is okay and you’re still in the early stages of labour, send you home again. There is a small chance that the baby could be restricting the umbilical cord and if this is the case, it needs to come out as soon as possible. Lots of hospitals discourage you from coming in at this early stage, but Christine advised us that if you ever want to be seen, just tell them that you can’t feel the baby moving. They’ll then see you straight away.

We talked to a doctor who explained all about medicalised deliveries, and a breastfeeding specialist who convinced us that if done correctly, sore nipples and mastitis can be avoided. After eight sessions, I not only feel confident about giving birth and looking after my newborn, but I can’t wait to feel my first contraction. And even better, Christine was right. Our group of girls are as thick as thieves. Charlie, ‘our’ first baby, was born a week ago, and we all shed a little tear when we heard the news….

The autumn has been good to us and I do feel for once I've made good use of my summer wardrobe. But this week its got distinctly colder, and as I reached into my wardrobe to get a cost out, the extent of my tummy growth became glaringly evident. Nothing would button up. I need to go shopping. Damn....

I've actually found quite a few non-maternity styles that work really well with even the quite pronounced bump that I’m now sporting. A coat is really quite an investment – almost too much of one to be fobbed off as simply maternity. We Londoners may use our coats for a good 9 months of the year, but if I’m going to make an investment, I want something that would be suitable for after my baby had made its entrance into this world.

This cashmere coat from Joseph really caught my eye – the belt can easily fit over a bump and then back on to the waist when the bump is no longer. I found having some kind of definition is great as the danger is that if there’s tonnes of coat covering your belly you just look obese. Plus its cashmere and we pregnant girls deserve nothing less….

For something a little more low key, this Day Birger et Mikkleson coat cannot fail to keep you and your baby toasty. Again the belt gives your bump shape so that people are nice to you when you’re queuing at the post office…..

And finally if you’re feeling like you really deserve a reward, this Moschino coat is to die for. Any husbands reading this? Just look at your poor wife carrying your child around, getting heaver and heavier. She deserves to be spoilt and this will earn you serious brownie points. (Girls, I think it’s highly unlikely that any of your husbands are reading my maternity blog but it’s always worth a try…).

Paris Fashion week was a myriad of stunning collections, but here at mama-la-mode we couldn't help being caught by Gaultier's Spring/Summer 2010 collection. Choosing feminine sexuality with a militaristic feel, Gaultier's signature approach was incorporating the idea of underwear as outerwear. The Pièce de résistance was a corset worn by supermodel and soon to be super-mummy Jourdan Dunn. Sporting satin conical cups and a padded cone bump that were bandaged together, she donned a corset style boob & bump enhancer! We don’t dare question Gaultiers' genius - was it a just his humorous adaptation of Jourdan's own bump? Not sure - either way it was a show stopper...

Congratulations to the beautiful Heidi Klum who gave birth to her 4^th child(!) on Friday the 9^th of October. Heidi gave birth to a girl and named her Lou Sulola Samuel. Klum posted a message on her website saying: "She is beautiful beyond words and we are happy that she chose us to watch her grow over the coming years."

As happy as we are for Heidi we have to admit we will miss her fabulous maternity style.

I often get asked if there’s anything that really scares me about pregnancy and I’ve never been entirely honest with my answer. OK, the idea of labour is pretty scary but with any luck I’ll be in hospital with ready access to lots of drugs. No, what really scares me is the chance my feet might get bigger.

Most of you will be thinking how pathetic I am, but I already have trouble fitting in to a size 42 shoe and there are only a handful of shoe companies that will do a size 42, most finish at a size 41. And I love shoes. To me they are art. Really, I have my favourite pair displayed on the mantelpiece in my bedroom as I love to admire them.

So now you can understand why the stories of women’s feet going up a size in pregnancy and not shrinking back was scaring the hell out of me. Was I really going to be confined to shopping for shoes in transvestite shops if I wanted children?

You can imagine my relief when Emi, my colleague, forwarded me the website of French Sole. I thought this was going to be yet another disappointing ‘window shopping’ experience, the kind that leaves me deflated after the shop assistant with her stupid size 36 feet, raises her eyebrows at me when I ask if she has anything larger than a size 42. I clicked on a pair of patent grey ballet flat to find that they went up to a size 44. Yes 44.

I’m not joking when I say I did a little dance around the office, punching the air and whooping like an Olympic Gold Medallist. The gorgeous shoes arrived the following day (in spite of the postal strike) and I have not taken them off since. In spite of my expanding belly, these wonderfully large shoes have put a little skip back into my step.

After weeks of pretty summer dresses over bikinis, and combined with the distinctly autumnal weather we’ve been having, it’s time to get back into jeans and glam up a bit.

I’ve just bought this great sequined cardigan from mango – it goes perfectly over my black straight leg J-Brand maternity jeans and gives a bit of sparkle to the darker evenings.

I’ve invested in three pairs of good jeans for my pregnancy, one white, one dark blue and now as winter approaches I really do need the black. I find that the straight leg smartens them up, so teamed with the right top, can be perfect for day or evening. The thought of putting on skinny jeans right now makes me want to be sick, so a straight leg is ideal.

As none of my basic tops fit over my bump any longer, I’ve bulk bought a load – my favourite fit by far is the rouched skinny-strap cami from Mama La Mode. I prefer the rouching over my belly than flat as it somehow makes it look less huge. These come in ivory and black and are the perfect staple over jeans and covered with an interesting cardigan.

The Bottom Blues, by Marina Fogle

I’ve started knocking things over with my bum. Yes, bum not even bump. Yesterday I nearly broke the franking machine in my office, and that would have been expensive… Of course I’ve put on a bit of weight, but the potential franking machine disaster has made me aware that my body could be changing more than I wanted.

I have been keeping an eye on my figure. My bum doesn’t look too bad when I look in the mirror but I was wearing a super flattering pair of Paige jeans. I’m hoping that the clumsiness is all to do with my changing body proportions, but I guess you do have to watch your weight slightly when you’re pregnant.

So what to do? Firstly I’ve started pregnancy yoga to try and keep me relatively toned but also to stretch out those increasingly painful muscles. I signed up for Lolly Stirk’s classes in Notting Hill. Once a week we do 1 ½ hours of yoga followed by tea, biscuits and chat. During the course, Lolly teaches us how to cope with our changing bodies, suggests various ways to cope with aches and pains, as well as preparing us for labour through relaxation and breathing techniques.

It’s a great way of spending a couple of hours. Not only do I feel physically great, – the yoga really stretches you out and relaxes you - but it’s lovely to get to know other girls in the class who are all due around the same time as me. There are plenty of ante-natal yoga classes around the country and having been very much a cardio girl pre-pregnancy, I’m a true convert.

For yoga I’m loving my MLM Fold Down Trousers and By Malene Birg er Flossie Tank – they’re smart enough for me to wear to work no need to change for yoga. I did discover the most adorable t-shirt though which makes me chuckle every time I look in the mirror – the Snoopy “It started with a kiss” t-shirt – it brings back all the innocence into pregnancy….

But you can’t be a complete saint during your pregnancy; you do have to indulge, a little. Quite frankly, you can’t drink, can’t eat half the delicious things in the world, can’t sleep, party, ski, flirt with boys on the tube – you HAVE to have a little indulgence. My sister, Olivia, introduced me to a great book called Red Velvet and Chocolate Heartache. Billed as ‘the ultimate feel-good book of natural cakes that taste naughty’, it does exactly what it says on the cover.

Harry Eastwood’s recipes are full of surprises. I was looking at making the Heartache Chocolate Cake last week and first on the list of ingredients is beetroot! I thought I was going crazy but I trusted her and it rocked. I’m making the Cinnamon Banana Bread for Ben as a wedding anniversary treat this weekend. I’ll probably have polished it off by the time he gets home. Oh well, blame it on the baby. His fault, he knocked me up!

The School Runway

So, the shoes are polished, the shirts are pressed and the bags have been pre-packed all that’s left is to figure out what you’re going to wear on the school run. When I first started feeling those twinges of nausea at about 7 weeks, I welcomed them in spite of my discomfort; they were a sign that all was well with the baby and something I was prepared to endure. Plus, by 12 weeks I’d been feeling fine again. Or so I’d been told. In fact, rather than subsiding, the nausea got worse and started being accompanied by headaches and extreme fatigue.

I’m someone that usually operates at a hundred miles an hour and I suddenly found myself feeling horrendously hungover every day, in spite of the fact I hadn’t had a drink for weeks. I’d get home from work in the evening and flop in bed, clutching my head and groaning at the frustration of my affliction.

I spoke to my sister, Chiara, who is a doctor and breezily responded that after 20 weeks it would go. 20 weeks? That’s 5 months of feeling awful. No way. If the health service couldn’t help, I was going to find another way. My great friend Emily had for months been telling me about her fabulous acupuncturist and having heard that this ancient Chinese medicine could help with morning sickness, I decided to give Sarah a call.

We spent 45 minutes discussing my pregnancy and my lifestyle. She was easy to talk to and I found myself telling her about everything from nightmares to silly little insecurities. She suggested complementing the acupuncture with herbs and already after the first session I began to feel an improvement. Four weeks later, I was feeling on top of the world – wonderfully positive, full of energy and headache free. I was truly a different person. I’ve since been going every couple of weeks and even my nightmares have subsided.

The most important thing is to find an acupuncturist who is suitably qualified but also with whom you feel comfortable and who you can communicate well with. The British Acupuncture Council is the UK governing body and has a search facility with which you can find qualified practitioners who operate in your area. Acupuncture might not be for everyone – people react in different ways and I’d never say that it’s every person’s solution to morning sickness. But it’s a non-invasive treatment that is safe for you and your baby. I was desperate enough to try anything – and I’m certainly not looking back.

I’ve just spent the week in the green mountains and crystal clear lakes surrounding Salzburg. My family hail from here and when I’m out here we embrace the good life – delicious wholesome food, mountain walks with the dogs followed by diving into deep lakes surrounded by mountains whose water is clean enough to drink. It’s right out of the sound of music.

And one thing that really hasn’t changed since Maria von Trapp’s time is the wearing of the traditional dirndl, Austria’s national dress that is still worn daily, especially by chic Salzburgers. Being a family of three girls, I joke not when I say that we have a cupboard full of about 50 dirndls. Not only does this allow us to wear a different one for every conceivable occasion, but it means that our friends are dressed in them the moment they arrive.

A dirndl is the most flattering piece of clothing – it emphasises your waist and gives even the most flat chested girl a fabulously impressive cleavage. I must admit, the idea of not being able to fit my expanding belly (and boobs) into a dirndl this year filled me with horror. “Don’t worry” chirped my dirndl clad mother, “I wore one until I was 8 months pregnant”. “Yes, but you still fit into your wedding dress, 30 years after your wedding. You’re not normal,” I grumbled back.
My sisters chose the most appropriate dirndl from our vast selection and the three of us, just about managed to coerce my enormous bust into the poor thing. We did all but the bottom two buttons up, the apron covered the bulge and even though my waist was nowhere to be seen, I really did look and feel fabulous….

Ultra Sound Care, by Marina Fogle

When I first got pregnant, I thought there were two options; either giving birth privately if you can afford the £10,000 upwards price tag, or on the NHS. I’ve since discovered that there are a variety of in between options that give you degrees of optimum care but don’t necessarily carry the price tag associated with a totally private birth.

One of these is opting to have your scans done privately. My great friend and pregnancy role model, Beverley Turner (who is married to my husband’s partner in crime James Cracknell) told me about the Fetal Medicine Centre. It’s run by Professor Nicolaides, who is a true pioneer when it comes to fetal medicine. He is responsible for developing studies that have enabled sonographers to diagnose spina biffida, downs syndrome and other fetal abnormalities, and is one of the few who carries out fetal surgery. He’s the best in the world and is responsible for the advanced diagnostics and pre-natal care that is used all over the world today. And he’s in London!

If you’re going to have an ultrasound, the fetal medicine centre is not just the best place in London or the UK, it’s the best in the world. The NHS say that unless you have complications, you only really require 2 scans, one at 12 weeks and another at around 20 weeks. If you decide to do these at the Fetal Medicine Centre, the 12 week scan will cost you £150 and the 20 week £200. It’s not a huge price when compared to a night at the Portland and for that it gives you the best care you could possibly get.

My doctor sister told me that a scan is only as good as the person who is scanning you. Professor Nicholaides trains all his sonographers and if there’s a problem, it will be referred to him. And on a more practical note, you can also book an appointment at a specific time which suits both of you. Obviously each person is different, but I felt that £350 was a reasonable price to pay to know that I was getting the best pre-natal scan around. The best thing is that all the profits from the Fetal Medicine Centre to go Nicolaides’ Fetal Medicine Foundation whose groundbreaking research will continue to improve the health of pregnant women and their babies all over the world through research and training in fetal medicine. Blinking brilliant. Writing this brings a tear to my eyes…but then I am hormonal.

This seasons' trend for pregnant fashionistas continues as model/ designer, socialite and POP magazine editor Dasha Zhurkova announced her first pregnancy. Dasha, the girlfriend of Roman Abromovich is said to be 'ecstatic and excited". Friends say "Dasha is so petite it's impossible to notice she has a baby bump, even though she is six months gone!"

Dasha's announcement follows a growing list of fashion pack pregnancies, with models Jourdan Dunn, Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, Gisele and Karolina Kurkova all announcing their baby bumps this Spring/Summer.

Kurkova stated "You know, it's probably the new thing to be pregnant. It's not to have the Chanel python bag.....It's to be pregnant". We couldn't agree more !

I was naughty, really naughty. I lied to my husband…about how much this dress cost…. But a Temperley dress is for life, not just for Christmas. As I plugged my credit card details into the internet, I envisioned my daughter wearing it for her first party, her doting mother (ageing gracefully) doing up the hooks and some soft focus going on…. And that’s got to be worth £988. Doesn’t it?

And having got it home, it is worth it. I feel like Angelina Jolie in Cannes with her bump. And I look as good as she did. And the reasons I bought it were:

1. It’s an investment – I will definitely wear it after my pregnancy, and when my figure returns to a size 10 and I’ve had my boobs lifted, it will be easy to alter.

2. It was on sale so I actually saved £262.

3. I paid for it with my BA card so I’m going to get loads of air miles

4. It’s the most beautiful dress I’ve ever worn

Reasons I should have just said no:

1. It was more expensive than my wedding dress
So if you look at it methodically, 4 to 1 that I should buy it. So it’s not an impulse buy but a carefully calculated decision.

Hormones had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Nightmare for not so newly pregnant girl who everyone says doesn’t look pregnant yet but whose waist doesn’t even fit into a size 16 dress. What on earth do I wear? And just to ensure even more lost hours of precious sleep, there’s an afternoon reception and evening party which means two outfits. AND it’s in London which means I don’t know whether it will be a blistering 30°C or a blustery 15°C.

This emerald green t-bags dress jumped out at me from the mama-la-mode website. The green is the flattering type (even better if you’re a bit tanned) and very unique. It’s a soft jersey so looks great but is comfortable enough to watch a whole season of Greys Anatomy in. A brilliant buy that will see you way past any formal occasion, onto the beach and into post pregnancy.

Being in London, you need a cover, so some kind of coat is essential. This Sonya Rykiel coat I love. It’s difficult to find any light summer coats now, but this is short so is fine for that in-between season and I love the purple detailing.

And finally the shoes…my favourite. One of the few things that being pregnant doesn’t prohibit you wearing. I have a pair of grey high heeled pumps which are perfect on brown legs under summer dresses. Such a neutral colour goes with any colour, any pattern. I’m very temped by these Rupert Sanderson shoes – they’re not astronomically high, being patent leather they won’t get ruined in the rain AND they’re in the sale. Hurray for summer weddings….

If one more person says to me ‘Wow, you don’t look pregnant at all’, I’m going to get violent. Seriously? My waist has doubled in size, and if I really don’t look pregnant, I just look fat, which is not the point.

I’m at that stage where my reluctantly emerging bump has to be dressed to look like pregnancy rather than fat, so something that is tight under your bust is ideal. I was in Zara the other day and they’ve got a great dress in that does just this. It’s not maternity, but works perfectly, and comes in a vibrant red, a great electric blue and black - I bought it in all three! I can see myself living in them for the rest of the summer – ideal to stuff in your beach bag for a poolside cover up and, teamed with leggings and cardigan / jacket, ideal for work or play. The good news is that it’s not in the sale (so easy to find) and costs a very reasonable £19.99.

The blue dress is shown here with my favourite Melissa Odabash maternity bikini underneath. I’ve already raved about this bikini; it’s so well cut it makes me want to take off my clothes and run around in a bikini every day.

As for the leggings teamed with the red dress, I have recently discovered these. Since their revival in the noughties, I hadn’t gone near them….too many memories of the 90’s, which for me was teenage spots, un-plucked eyebrows and puppy fat. But when you’re pregnant, dresses are very often the most comfortable and versatile things to wear. Living in England where the weather is not usually on our side, a pair of leggings under a dress is the perfect solution. Mama-la-mode's maternity leggings are up there with my cashmere tracky bums on my list of comfy things to wear, and the waist is v shaped to sit just below your blooming bump.

Anyone will tell you that one of the keys to dressing while you’re pregnant is accessorising. No one can huff and tell you this is a waste of money, as jewellery is not only something you will love and use long after your bump disappears, but an investment that you can pass on to your daughters. I’m currently lusting after Vinnie Day’s gorgeous multi-hoop pendant in gold. It’s nice and long, and will give that extra wow factor to any outfit, particularly in the summer.

Summer is usually the time I get excited about finally wearing all my summery dresses that (rather hopefully) are in my cupboard from May to October. It’s never warm enough to wear them in England, but come a trip abroad, it’s time to finally make use of them. Rather foolishly this year, I have failed to take them out of my cupboard and put them into storage for the duration of my pregnancy, so as I pack for a week in Portugal, each of my beloved dresses looks at me tantalisingly, daring me to try one on.

I did try on a bikini and for a moment pondered whether I might, at 20 weeks, just be able to get away with it. I even showed my husband. “What do you think? Suitable for the beach or just too x-rated?” I asked. A big grin appeared on his face. “Absolutely” he beamed, “I’m loving that look…”. Another glance in the mirror confirmed my suspicions, I looked like a wannabe page three model with a beer belly. No, a few new summer pieces were definitely needed.

My key summer holiday pieces:

Milly is one of my favourite brands with quirky, good quality pieces that quickly become favourites. The elasticated waist will rise to your new waist, above your bump and this will last you through your pregnancy. Even better, it’s on sale now from Net a Porter.

T-bags coral maxi dress from mama-la-mode: This is a fantastically versatile dress, that will go over a bikini for the beach or with some statement jewellery and a cropped jacket, to a glam party. I wore this to the Cartier Lunch at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and had lots of compliments.

A big hat is any pregnant girl’s best friend. Pigmentation suddenly appearing on your face when you’re pregnant is very common so you’ve got to take extra care in the sun. I love this straw visor from Jigsaw. Visors are easy to pack and you can just stick your hair up in a pony tail above it. And it really keeps the sun off your face.

Flip Flops: I’ve been dreading the idea of my feet getting even bigger during pregnancy; they’re already a size 42 – any bigger and I’ll be confined to transvestite shops which isn’t really the pregnancy look I’m after. On those hot summer days when your feet swell anyway, pair of flip flops is a must. I’ll always get a good pedicure before I leave and then use a pair of beautiful flip flops as ‘foot jewellery’. LK Bennett do good ones, but on the expensive side for what they are, so just as well they’re all in the sale right now.

And finally don’t leave without stocking up on some beauty essentials. For me Kiehls is a one stop shop. I’ve been using their Crème de Corps since I became pregnant and there’s not a stretch mark in sight. Pre-holiday, I love their self-tan. It doesn’t have that awful fake tan smell and is very light so there’s no danger of the ending up looking like a Satsuma. Finally, I always have a tube of their SPF50 sun cream for face and body. My skin loves to break out in spots the moment I put sun cream on, and this is one of the only ones that prevents this.

Having initially thought I’d never bother with clothes that will only fit me when I’m pregnant, I’ve realised that the desire to look good, be inspired by great little outfits and be excited about wearing them, doesn’t disappear with your waist.

So I’m going to share my weekly finds, looks and nuggets that work for pregnant girls here on my blog with mama-la-mode.

I’m learning every day how to dress my new figure, what accentuates my new curves, and how to avoid looking like I’ve eaten all the pies. I realise that if you’re clever, you don’t need to stick to maternity clothes, that you can team a few maternity essentials with some wonderful non-maternity pieces that will embrace your figure, and that you will love wearing even after your baby is born.

I will scour what’s around that week, from Primark to Prada, and hope to inspire women with baby bellies, to convince them that clothes shopping for a pregnant figure can be hugely fun and rewarding - after all, just because you’re pregnant, doesn’t mean you can’t look a million dollars every day….

You may feel perfectly comfortable, but the likelihood is that you are probably wearing the wrong size right now! During pregnancy wearing the correct bra is of significant importance; not only will your breasts change size/shape, but you may find that your bust area suffers from tenderness and irritation, making the bra you wear the most important item you purchase.

So how do you measure your bra size?

Simply follow these 3 easy steps to give you the most accurate measurement:

Take a soft measuring tape, and wear a bra that you feel best supports your chest.

Step 1:

First take a deep breath and exhale, expanding your ribcage to its fullest.
Using the soft measuring tape, measure the circumference of your underbust, keeping the measuring tape taut, straight and held flat against your body. You should measure the area closest to your breasts avoiding breast tissue.

Take a note of this measurement as it will be the basis of your band size calculation.

Step 2:

Next take the measurement of your overbust; to do this you must measure the circumference of the fullest part of your bust, the tape should be flat against your back, but held fairly loosely around your breasts ensuring the tape sits completely straight. This measurement will determine your cup size.

Step 3:

Now enter the measurements you have taken from step 1 and 2, into the bra calculator below. Press calculate to to get your bra size !

It’s an understatement to say that pregnancy is at times exhausting! During pregnancy many women are plagued by seemingly endless nights of disturbed sleep, followed by days of fatigue.
Having to compete with frequent bathroom trips and searing heartburn matched with baby related anxiety are enveloped into ones life and pepper daily pregnant life, but rest is ultimately a key factor in pre-natal health.

We've gathered together a few tips on how to make sure that you get the deep sleep you and your bump need and deserve:

- Exercise.... yes we know it’s a cliché and we know that exercising is probably the LAST thing you feel like doing, but easy stretching exercises like yoga and pilates will help you burn pent up energy, whilst giving a wealth of benefits to you and your babies' health.
NB – try to exercise no later than early evening, as exercising later will leave you fighting the effects of adrenaline and the endorphins.

- Invest in a new pillow. If you don't have one already, v-shaped pillows are brilliant! They’re perfect for adjusting to your changing shape, and giving extra support to you and your bump, and great for feeding post birth.
NB – Placed between your knees will help ease the pressure on the hips, and make it easier to achieve a comfortable position in order to sleep on your left hand side.

- Wind down before you attempt to get into bed! Going to bed with a head full of worries will further agitate the problem, you will be left lying awake contemplating your ‘to do list’. Try to take 30 minutes before you get into bed to write down your thoughts, take a warm bath, listen to some relaxing music, indulge in a soothing aroma as to ease yourself to bed, you’ll find drifting off far easier when your in a calmer state.

- Start a routine now: exercise – unwind - go to bed, and sleep! By getting yourself into a routine your body will be more prepared to allow you to rest and a consistent routine will be great practice for when baby is born.

Avoid late meals- For some it may not be convenient, but taking into account you sleep pattern throughout the day will allow you to get more sleep during the night. Big meals at night will aggravate problems like heartburn or nausea. Consider eating more carbohydrates during the day, a high protein snack in the evening and perhaps a cup of warm milk and a banana before bed to ease you to sleep.

Grab all the unbroken sleep whilst you can before the baby arrives !!

Unexpected double trouble...

A good friend of mine and her husband have a gorgeous little three year-old girl, and having always dreamed of two children, decided they were ready to try for another.

Her husband, who luckily still has a good job in a well known bank, got to work converting the home office into a second baby bedroom, and she continued her part-time job as a French teacher.

When her doctor finally confirmed her pregnancy, she was thrilled ! Great news…or was it?

Within minutes her smile fell from her face as the doctor told her she was expecting twins! She was filled with misery as her picture-perfect life of two children in her meticulously prepared home dissolved, and panic if how to cope set in.

She asked her doctor how this could have happened, as there was no family history of twins on either side. She was taken aback when he said that having a baby after 30 considerably increases the chances.....she shrieked back, ' but I'm only 32!! '

So, after a few months of getting used to preparing for a life with three kids and an un-planned family of five instead of four, she was delighted to discover she is having two little girls.

She is now enjoying her pregnancy, and excitedly imagining future life with her trio of girls happily combing each others’ hair!

Whilst scheduling a birth might be a convenience for the rich and famous, for some couples it is a real and valid decision.

If reports are correct it would seem as though Coleen Rooney who is 3 months pregnant, has been particularly organized with her birth plan. Rumours are circling that Coleen has already decided the date she will give birth by cesarean section later this year. The supposed reason for this choice is that her expected delivery date is thought to clash with the England vs Ukraine World Cup qualifier which her husband Wayne Rooney is assumed to be playing in, thus affecting Wayne Rooney’s chance to be present at the birth of his first child.

I’m sure many daddys-to-be secretly wish their partner would be so courteous as to arrange their birth schedule around the football season! However in the bigger picture, for many women their partners’ career does present an obstacle when it comes to the impending birth of their child.

There will be many expectant mothers whose partners are in the military with an upcoming tour of duty, for whom this choice is somewhat familiar. Naturally they would prefer their partner to be there for the birth before they are deployed, and therefore scheduling the birth is far more of a necessity than a luxury.

Are planned births a contrived attempt to control fate, or is this an acceptable response to managing a family within our ever increasingly busy working lives?

For first time mothers, knowing what is right or wrong for the baby is a constant debate. However, when it comes to your bump and maternity wardrobe the general rule is, if it feels comfortable, then it is safe.

Question: Is it ok to wear tights during pregnancy? ....the answer is yes, as long as they are not restrictive or too tight. Daphne Metland, the medical writer and author of pregnancy bible 'Expecting' says, 'It is safe to wear maternity tights all the way through your pregnancy. However, as tights are made of synthetic fabric they can make you sweat more and feel uncomfortable, so it is important to choose tights with plenty of cotton content. '

Our maternity tights by Trasparenze are made from fine Italian yarn, and feature a gently supportive cotton body which sits snugly over your bump. Finding the perfect fit maternity jeans can be daunting, but with the widest online selection of designer maternity jeans, we have pooled our expertise and tips on finding the right style for you and your bump:

A good pair of jeans is an essential maternity investment as you are likely to wear them at least 5 days out of 7, so it is important to buy the right pair for you and your shape.

First you need to get to grips with the different ‘bump-band’ options available for maternity. It is really down to the individuals shape and size as to which is more comfortable, and this diagram (below) shows the difference between them, and which brands feature which band.
